A strange noise in the Air: A life-changing encounter

A strange noise coming from the bathroom during a cross-country flight gives flight attendant Leslie a major scare. She has no idea that the child she finds there will change her life forever.

Leslie rubbed her temples as she made her way to the plane. A pounding headache reminded her of the wild night she’d spent partying at one of Atlanta’s most popular clubs.

“Amy!” she called out when she spotted her fellow flight attendant. “Do you have any painkillers, please?”

Amy glanced at her and rolled her eyes. “Of course I do, but you really shouldn’t party the night before a long flight.”

“What do you expect me to do? Visit museums?” Leslie sighed. “At least going out helps me forget.”

Amy gave her a friendly nudge, and the two boarded the plane together.

“One day, everything will work out for you, Leslie,” Amy said. “Just have faith.”

As passengers boarded, Leslie and Amy prepared the cabin, gave the safety demonstration, and made sure everyone was settled. Finally, Leslie slipped away to the galley and took the headache pills.

“I wonder if Amy would mind if I laid down in the crew rest area,” Leslie muttered to herself, just as a strange sound made her freeze.

She stopped to listen. A moment passed—maybe she imagined it. Maybe Amy was right—maybe she'd partied too hard. Leslie had already planned a list of clubs to visit once they landed in Los Angeles, but perhaps she should take it easy.

As she passed the lavatory, Leslie heard a faint noise again—a high-pitched whimper, like a meow. It couldn’t be a cat, so it had to be a child crying.

Amy knocked on the door. No response. She opened it cautiously—and screamed.

Leslie rushed over and realized that the trembling figure that had startled Amy was a small boy. He had been crying and now looked up at her with teary eyes.

“Don’t scare me like that!” Leslie said, startled. “What are you doing here?”

The boy hugged his knees and started crying again. The initial shock wore off, and Leslie’s heart softened. She crouched down in front of him.

“Sorry for yelling,” she said gently. “You scared me. I’m Leslie. What’s your name?”

The boy sniffled. “Ben.”

Leslie helped Ben to his feet and sat him down in a fold-out crew seat while she searched the passenger list for his name. He probably wasn’t used to flying—it might’ve been his first time—and he didn’t seem to be enjoying it.

She frowned. Checked the list again. No Ben.

It had been a long time since Leslie had needed to comfort a child. The thought made her homesick, but now wasn’t the time for that. She sat next to him and rested her hand on his arm.

“Ben, sweetheart, are you lost? I can help if you tell me where your family is.”

Ben let out another sob. He was clutching a brown paper bag to his chest, Leslie noticed—making her nervous, especially with the horror stories she’d heard about banned substances on flights.

“What’s in the bag, Ben?” she asked carefully.

“It’s Grandma’s medicine,” he replied. “She’ll die without it—and it’ll be my fault!”

Over the next few hours, Leslie coaxed the full story from him. Ben was the youngest in a big family. While his older brothers spent their time playing sports and getting into trouble, Ben dreamed of being a scientist.

His mom didn’t appreciate the sometimes disastrous side effects of his experiments. All Ben wanted was to make her proud enough to hug him. Instead, she’d punish him by making him sit in the corner.

“I just want her to look at me with the same love and pride she gives my brothers,” he said through tears.

“So I took Grandma’s medicine. I stole it.”

When Grandma got sick, the family planned a trip to Seattle to bring her the medicine. But at the airport, Ben got separated from them. He thought he saw his mom and followed her onto the plane.

“But it wasn’t my mom,” he sobbed. “And now I’m on the wrong plane. I wanted to be the hero who saved Grandma—but now I’m the villain. She’s going to die because of me.”

Leslie reported the situation when they landed in Los Angeles. She felt awful for Ben—but she was ready to move on. So she was shocked to learn that the airline had made arrangements requiring her to watch over him.

She looked at the boy she now had to care for and share a hotel room with. It wasn’t fair. She had a whole list of nightclubs she’d planned to hit in L.A.—and now she had to babysit.

“This is the best gift I’ve ever received,” Leslie said bitterly. “I just hope it’s enough.”

She texted Amy and another colleague, Brandon, but neither was willing to take Ben. She even considered hiring a babysitter, but couldn’t afford it. Every dollar had to be saved to support her family back home.

They ate pizza in silence that night, which Leslie had ordered for dinner. Then her phone rang. Her stomach dropped when she heard the voice on the other end.

“My baby is sick?” Leslie asked. “What happened, Mom? Joe was fine last time we talked. Did you take him to the doctor?”

“Yes,” her mother replied. “They’ve referred us to a specialist. We have an appointment this week. They mentioned it might be a genetic condition. They may need to test you too—because you’re his mother.”

“I’ll do anything to make Joe better,” Leslie said.

When the call ended, she curled up and cried. She wished more than anything that she could hold her son, bury her face in his soft, curly hair, and tell him everything would be okay.

But Joe was far away. Her flight schedule hadn’t allowed her to visit home in over a month. No amount of partying or drinking could dull the ache in her heart.

“Miss Leslie?” Ben approached and placed a hand on her arm. “I think you should take this for Joe.”

Another wave of tears hit her as she looked at the medicine bag Ben was offering.

“If I can’t save Grandma,” he said, “maybe I can help you instead. Take it for Joe.”

“I have a better idea,” Leslie said, typing on her phone. “I’m going to take you to Seattle, Ben. Then I’ll go home to Missoula to see my son.”

She bought Ben a ticket with her own money, arranged time off work, and boarded a flight with him.

“I’m scared,” Ben said quietly as they boarded. “What if Grandma’s already dead? Mom will never love me then.”

Leslie tousled his hair.

“Your mom has always loved you, Ben. That’s what parents do. I’m sure she’s been worried sick—and she’ll be so happy to see you safe.”

Ben didn’t seem to believe her. Not even when his entire family ran to hug him at the Seattle airport. Leslie watched his mom cover him in kisses, promising never to overlook him again.

Leslie’s reunion wasn’t as joyful. She was shocked by how pale and thin Joe looked. He felt so fragile in her arms.

That night, Leslie stayed up talking with her mother and reviewing Joe’s medical records. She felt overwhelmed, helpless, and filled with guilt.

When she finally went to bed, she curled up next to Joe, buried her face in his coconut-scented hair, and made a vow—to Joe, to herself, and to God—that she would do whatever it took to make him healthy and happy again.

Days passed, and Joe didn’t improve. The specialist still couldn’t pinpoint his condition. Meanwhile, he only seemed to get weaker.

Leslie asked for more time off, but the airline refused to pay her during her absence, even with Joe seriously ill.

After another week of doctor visits and mounting bills, money started to run out. Leslie’s mom lived on a pension and had always relied on Leslie to provide for Joe. Now they were desperate.

“Maybe I can find a job here,” Leslie said. “Something that pays more.”

“It’s worth a shot,” her mom replied, shrugging. “If needed, I can sell the house.”

Just then, someone knocked on the door—and everything changed.

Leslie opened it and found a familiar face staring back.

“Ben?” she said, recognizing him. Behind him stood the family she’d seen at the airport. “What’s going on?”

“I have something for you—and for Joe,” Ben said, handing her an envelope.

Leslie opened it—and gasped.

“A check? I can’t accept this,” she stammered. “It’s over a hundred thousand dollars!”

“We want you to have it,” Ben’s mom said. “We did a crowdfunding campaign for my mom’s treatment, but she…” The woman covered her mouth. “She passed away a few days ago.”

Ben’s dad stepped forward and hugged his wife as she began to cry.

“We all agreed the money should go to you—for Joe,” Ben added.

“We also posted the decision on the campaign page,” the dad said. “Everything’s legal and accounted for.”

Leslie clutched the check to her chest, tears in her eyes.

“Thank you. Truly. This is the greatest gift anyone has ever given me. I just hope it’s enough.”

Ben hugged her legs tightly.

“It will be enough, I’m sure of it! And when Joe gets better, I’ll come back to play with him.”

Leslie smiled and ruffled his hair.

“You’ll always be welcome here, Ben.”

The check was almost exactly what she needed. After countless doctor visits and treatments, Joe was himself again within a month.

Watching him play with the neighbor’s dog in the yard, Leslie could hardly believe he’d ever been sick at all.

“And it’s all thanks to Ben,” she whispered.

A familiar sound overhead—the roar of a plane—caught her attention. Soon she’d be back at work. But first, she had an idea for how to repay Ben’s family.

She pulled out her phone and made some calls. The next day, she phoned Ben’s mom to share the news: the airline was offering their family lifetime discounts on all flights.

What can we learn from this story?

Every child needs to feel seen. Ben acted out in desperation for his mother’s attention. If she had recognized his need for love earlier, she could’ve made him feel valued before things got out of hand.

You can’t outrun emotional pain. Leslie tried to numb her sadness with parties and distractions. But only by facing her grief and reconnecting with her son did she begin to heal.
