Behind closed doors: The secret that shattered our future

I was convinced my boyfriend was hiding something from me, so I followed him… and caught him with another woman. I confronted him, thinking that would be the end of it. But when she showed up at our family dinner acting like she belonged there, everything I thought I knew fell apart.

Why are men so afraid to introduce their girlfriends to their families? The obvious answer would be that they don’t take the relationship seriously. But that wasn’t the case with Michael and me.

Our relationship was serious. We both knew it was real. We talked about the future, and it was clear we saw it together. Probably forever.

Still, he refused to introduce me to his family. The only relative I’d met was his cousin Josh, and that was just because we ran into him on the street.

It was strange because his whole family knew about me. They even sent us Christmas cards together. Yet Michael kept postponing the introductions.

He always said his mother was a “complicated person.” He insisted he was just trying to protect my peace of mind. But how bad could she really be?

From what I knew, she’d had Michael when she was 16, which to me meant she should be young, modern, maybe even close to him.

Michael swore otherwise. He said she was controlling, clingy, and had scared off all his previous girlfriends.

He said he was afraid of losing me, so he kept me away from her.

But lately something inside me had changed. Michael was distant. He disappeared for hours, gave vague explanations, lame excuses.

He was glued to his phone all the time. And one night, I saw him withdrawing money from his savings account.

At that moment, I knew there could only be two possibilities: either he was about to propose… or he was cheating on me.

One night, I decided to ask him directly, hoping he’d be honest.

“Michael, are you going to propose to me?” I asked.

“What? Have we really reached the point where you’re pressuring me about marriage?” he replied, eyes wide.

“I’m not pressuring you. I just feel like you’re about to, and I want to know if I’m right.”

“And if I am, wouldn’t that ruin the surprise?”

“You’ve been acting really strange lately. I don’t know if you’re going to propose… or if you’re cheating on me.”

Michael looked genuinely surprised.

“I’m not cheating on you. That’s for sure. And if I ever plan to propose, trust me, you won’t see it coming.”

“So, what’s going on?”

He hesitated, then sighed.

“Okay. I think it’s time you met my family.”

“Really?” I asked, unbelieving.

“Yes. It’s time. They’re coming this weekend.”

My heart almost stopped.

“That’s amazing!”

“You say that now. But when you meet them, you might change your mind,” he joked.

The next day, I texted Kate and begged her to help me get ready: nails, clothes, everything. If this dinner ended with a ring, I had to be ready.

First the manicures. Then the search for the perfect outfit. And let me tell you, after the fifth store, it felt like a psychological war.

We were leaving yet another store when Kate pushed me back inside.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, confused.

“Nothing!” she stammered.

“What did you see?”

“Don’t look. There’s nothing.”

Of course, I looked. And that’s when my world shattered.

There was Michael. With another woman. A completely different woman. She was clinging to his arm; he was carrying her bags. They looked… happy.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“I told you not to look,” Kate said.

“He’s cheating on me,” I whispered, tears in my eyes. “He’s not going to propose. He’s just setting up the family dinner so his mom can kick me out, like all the others.”

“You don’t know that,” Kate tried to console me. “Maybe it’s not what it looks like.”

“What else could it be? Look at her! She’s beautiful. Way out of my league.”

“Really? She looks older than you. Probably just the makeup,” Kate said.

“You only say that to make me feel better.”

“It’s not true.”

I wiped my tears.

“Let’s follow them.”

We followed them through the mall. She laughed at every joke. He bought her a coffee and looked at her like she was the only woman in the world.

Later, they went to the parking lot and got into Michael’s car. Kate and I got into mine and followed.

He took her to a beautiful, expensive-looking house. Maybe she was married. I tried to see if she wore a ring, but we were too far away.

He even got out to open the door for her. They hugged, she kissed him on the cheek leaving a lipstick mark, and said goodbye sweetly.

“I took a picture, in case you need proof,” Kate said.

“Not now. I’m going to expose him at the family dinner. In front of everyone.”

I turned off the car, grabbed my smoothie, and walked determinedly toward the door. When it opened, she smiled kindly.

“How can I help you?”

“How about you stop sleeping with my boyfriend?” I yelled, throwing the smoothie in her face.

“Are you crazy?!” she screamed.

“That’s karma!”

“I’m calling the police, you lunatic!”

But I didn’t wait. I got back in the car, Kate in shock, and we left silently.

When I got home, Michael was already there. And yes, he still had a lipstick stain on his cheek.

“Hi! How was your day?”

“We went shopping with Kate. Didn’t find much,” I replied, staring at his face. “What’s on your cheek?”

He looked at his reflection in his phone.

“Lunch leftovers,” he said, wiping it off. “How embarrassing.”

Liar.

“Want to watch something on TV?”

“No. I’m tired. I’m going to bed.”

“I want to give you money for your nails. You have to have them ready for the dinner with my family.”

“I already got them done today,” I said and left.

That night I couldn’t sleep. Michael never offered to pay for my nails. It was clear: he was going to propose. Damn him.

He was cheating on me… and yet he wanted to marry me. I loved him. God, how much I loved him.

And that hurt more than I imagined. I wanted to scream. I wanted to tell him I hated him.

But it wasn’t true. I loved him. And I hated myself for it. But I wasn’t going to let it go. I was going to show his whole family who I really was.

Finally, the day arrived. We cooked together. He joked to make me laugh, but I was distant.

When we finished setting the table, the doorbell rang. Michael opened the door and came back to the dining room with an older man and… her. That woman.

“What the hell is she doing here?!” I shouted.

“You mean my mom?” Michael asked, confused.

“Your… mom?” I stammered. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, Olivia. That’s my mom,” he said coldly.

I couldn’t speak. What do you say to the woman you accused of sleeping with your boyfriend? The one you threw a smoothie at?

“Nice to finally meet you, Olivia,” she said coldly. “I’m Cynthia. Too bad you won’t be in my son’s life much longer.”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” Michael asked.

“Because you’re going to break up,” Cynthia replied.

The older man, probably her husband, stayed silent, visibly uncomfortable.

“And why exactly?” Michael challenged.

“Remember the crazy woman I told you about, the one who threw a smoothie at me? That was her,” Cynthia said proudly.

Michael looked at me.

“Olivia?”

“I thought you were cheating,” I whispered. “I didn’t know she was your mom. Kate and I followed you. We saw you drop her off. And… I lost control.”

“Why didn’t you talk to me? Why didn’t you ask?”

“I don’t know. I just yelled at her to stop sleeping with you and threw the smoothie.”

“God,” Michael said, rubbing his temples. “And why didn’t you say you were my mom?”

“I wanted to see your face when you found out,” Cynthia replied, smiling. “Now leave her alone and let’s go to a real restaurant for dinner.”

“I’m not leaving her.”

“WHAT!?”

“What I did was crazy. I acted like a maniac,” I said.

“Yes, but you didn’t know who she was. And you’re my maniac,” he said, kneeling down. “Olivia, I love you. I want to spend my life with you. Will you marry me?”

“Yes. Of course I will,” I whispered. He put the ring on me and kissed me.

“This is crazy! I forbid you to marry her!” Cynthia shouted.

“You can’t forbid me anything. And I know you saw Olivia spying on us. You never kissed me on the cheek before, never asked me to open the door. You wanted her to see us. You’re as guilty as she is.”

“She doesn’t deserve you!”

“That’s for me to decide. And if anyone here disagrees, they can leave.”

Cynthia spun on her heels and left. Her husband muttered an apology and followed her.

“I’m really sorry,” I said to Michael.

“It’s okay. I would have done the same if I saw you with another man,” he replied before kissing me.
