Centre Pompidou's major renovation: A new era for Paris' iconic cultural hub

When the Centre Pompidou opened in 1977, it created a stir in Parisian society. With its industrial exterior and brightly colored exposed pipes, the massive cultural center stood in stark contrast to the classical buildings of the Marais district, a part of Paris reshaped by Haussmann’s 19th-century renovations.

The building’s inside-out design was inspired by modern museums like the Guggenheim in New York. French president Georges Pompidou, who envisioned the project, sought to create a space where various art forms could be brought together under one roof in a bold and constantly evolving structure.

Approaching its 50th anniversary, the Pompidou is set to close for five years to begin a major renovation. Supported by France’s Ministry of Culture, the update aims to ensure the building’s sustainability and long-term functionality.

The closure comes as Paris’ art scene faces other challenges, including renovations at the Louvre due to its deteriorating condition. While the Pompidou does not house a masterpiece like the "Mona Lisa," its collection of 140,000 works, featuring pieces by Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall, attracts around 3.2 million visitors each year. The BPI library and the panoramic view of Paris are also key draws.

The Pompidou is facing several technical issues, notably the presence of asbestos, along with a large carbon footprint due to the building’s size. Security updates are also needed, given the ongoing threat of terrorism. The renovation, estimated to cost 260 million euros, is vital for preserving the center.

While the closure has generated some controversy, with critics arguing that the renovation should proceed in stages to keep the Pompidou open, the government has decided to move forward with the full closure.

The renovation will be led by the architecture firm Moreau Kusunoki, who will update both the interior and exterior, including the large plaza in front.

During the closure, parts of the Pompidou’s collection will be exhibited in France and around the world, while the BPI and the Kandinsky Library will be relocated. The architects’ design focuses on blending modern needs with the Pompidou’s original spirit as a creative hub.

The renovation will include a new children’s space and repurposing the underground parking area to accommodate contemporary needs.

The update is aimed at making the Pompidou more accessible and fostering social engagement, with a vision for it to become an extension of the city.

The emphasis is on creating a physical space for interaction, in contrast to the digital world that dominates much of modern life.
