From abandoned to adored: Marco’s journey from pain to love

In the spring of 2019, volunteers from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) received a heartbreaking call about an injured puppy tied to a fence. The team was immediately concerned, but nothing could have prepared them for the scene they encountered upon arrival.

They had set out to rescue a dog—but the fragile soul they found barely resembled one.

"His face was swollen to nearly five times its normal size," SRSL shared in a Facebook post. "His wounds had gone untreated, and he was lying there in the sun, suffering."

The team was stunned by the sight of the helpless puppy and sprang into action to save him.

The puppy, later named Marco, had been waiting for days, hoping someone would find him. Though he was relieved to see the rescuers, the pain was so overwhelming he couldn’t show it.

"His whole body was infected," SRSL wrote. "We told him to hold on and to keep fighting."

They gently cut the rope that tethered him to the fence and carried him carefully to safety. Marco was rushed to the organization’s veterinary hospital to begin what would become a long and complicated recovery.

"He had developed sepsis," SRSL said. "He spent months in our clinic receiving IV fluids, antibiotics, and other medications to heal."

While no one knew exactly what Marco had been through before being abandoned, his injuries suggested he may have been used in dog fighting.

Despite his traumatic past, Marco’s heart was still full of love. Even as he battled to survive, he made sure his new friends knew just how much he appreciated them.

"The most incredible part is that he still loves and trusts humans," SRSL wrote. "He still seeks love—and gives it too."

Thankfully, Marco made a full recovery. The swollen, unrecognizable face gave way to the real Marco—healthy and whole again.

Once he was strong enough, Marco moved into a foster home. His foster mom, Katie, quickly fell in love with him and soon made the adoption official.

Today, Marco is living his best life with his amazing new family and a few fellow rescue dogs from SRSL. His painful past is now far behind him.

"Marco is spoiled to the bone… really spoiled," Katie wrote in a note to SRSL, later shared on Facebook. "He has a huge personality—he’s the perfect mix of funny, sweet, smart, and protective."

From stealing blankets before bedtime to keeping watch over the neighborhood from his favorite window, Marco’s days are now filled with comfort and joy.

And his family wouldn’t have it any other way.

"He’s still the cutest little dog, with that tilted head of his," Katie shared. "We love our little Marco!"
