From Leftovers to Love: A Grocery Store Owner’s Heartbreaking Discovery and a New Beginning
A grocery store owner starts to suspect a well-dressed little girl who comes every day to her store to collect leftovers, and decides to follow her. What she discovers breaks her heart.
Kimberly Cook was busy restocking her store one morning when she first noticed a little girl. Every day, at the same time, the girl would arrive at the donation area outside the store—a container where people left food for the homeless—and fill a large bag with leftovers before running off.
Kimberly thought the girl must be with someone, but soon realized she was always alone. Besides, the girl, about five years old, was well dressed and didn’t look like someone who needed to eat leftovers. So Kimberly decided to talk to her.
“Hi! My name’s Kimberly. I’ve noticed you come here often. What’s your name?”
The girl looked at her fearfully. Then asked, “Can I take food from here? Please?”
“Of course, sweetie. But I just wanted to—” Before Kimberly could finish, the girl turned and quickly started filling her bag.
Kimberly sighed.
“If you need help, I can help you. Are you home alone? Are your parents sick?”
A little vigilance can save a life.
But the girl ignored her, as if she hadn’t heard.
“I’m sorry, I have to go,” she said before running off with the full bag.
Kimberly felt something wasn’t right, so the next day she waited for the girl to come again. When she saw her collecting food, she asked her manager to watch the store and decided to follow the girl discreetly in her car.
She watched the girl happily walking down the streets, swinging the bag, until she entered an alley. Kimberly waited until the girl reached the end before following. Then she saw her take another turn, this time down an even narrower passage where the car couldn’t fit.

Kimberly got out and followed on foot. She realized they were in an abandoned area, with old, dark, and rundown houses.
The girl walked to the edge of the neighborhood, crossed a field, and stopped in front of an abandoned garage. What is such a small child doing in a place like this? Kimberly wondered.
Suddenly, the garage door opened, and two figures came out: a younger boy and a dog that looked sick.
Kimberly approached to talk to them, but when the girl saw her, she grabbed the boy and ran back inside the garage, pulling the metal door down behind them.
“I’m not here to hurt you. I want to help,” Kimberly said. “I’ve been waiting here. I could come in if I wanted, but I don’t want to scare you, okay?”

Then the girl answered:
“No, we’re not coming out. You’re going to call the police. Please go away.”
“The police?” Kimberly asked, confused. “No, I won’t. I promise. Will you come out now?”
After a few seconds of silence, the girl came out.
“Where are the boy and the dog?” Kimberly asked.
The girl started crying.
“Please don’t take them away. I’m Jason’s big sister. Mommy told me to take care of him. My name’s Stacey. We also have a little dog named Timmy.”
“Don’t cry, Stacey. I’m going to help you and your brother. Where are your parents?”
“Mommy and daddy went with the angels,” she said, wiping her tears. “So we ran away from home and came here. Mrs. Green said since they died in a fire, the police would come for us and take us somewhere else. But I don’t want that!”
Kimberly’s heart broke hearing this.
“Stacey, when did this happen? And how long have you been living here?”

“It was last week. We were playing outside… and then there was a fire in our house. They took mommy and daddy to the hospital, but they never came back…”
Kimberly felt a deep compassion for them.
“Listen, Stacey. You can come with me. I promise I won’t call the police. I will take care of you, Jacob, and Timmy. We’ll take the dog to the vet, okay? He looks really sick.”
“Really?” Stacey’s eyes lit up. “Do you promise Jacob and Timmy will stay with me?”
“I promise, Stacey. Come on, okay?”
The girl nodded, called her brother and the dog, and they left the garage. Kimberly took them to her home, fed them, and later took Timmy to the vet.
When her husband Josh came home, she told him everything. He was worried.
“Honey, how could you bring them here? I know it hurts to see them like this, but we can’t just keep them. What if the police are looking for them?”

“I know, Josh, but we can talk to Sandra. We were already thinking about adopting, remember? Sandra is a social worker and can help us. We can notify the police, but carefully. The kids are very scared of them.”
“Alright, but we’ll call Sandra and the police first thing tomorrow morning.”
Josh and Kimberly talked with Sandra, a close friend and social worker who had helped them as foster parents, and thanks to her help they were able to keep the children legally as temporary family. Sandra also convinced the police it wouldn’t be a problem.
A month later, Josh and Kimberly decided to officially adopt the children and began the legal process. Though it took time, Jacob and Stacey were finally adopted. Josh and Kimberly, who couldn’t have children of their own, were happy to create a family with two adorable kids and a loving dog. Stacey and Jacob, for their part, were thrilled to have a home where no one would ever separate them again.
What can we learn from this story?
Love is what makes a family. Josh and Kimberly chose to adopt Jacob and Stacey and raise them as their own.
A little vigilance can save a life. Thanks to Kimberly’s concern, Stacey and her brother no longer have to survive on leftovers or live in an abandoned garage.
