Karma strikes: The Christmas my sister-in-law threw away our mother's ashes
Everything was set for our Christmas dinner this year, but days before, my brother and his wife showed up unannounced, asking to stay at our place. Though their visit was unexpected, I didn’t mind too much, until my sister-in-law pushed me to the limit with her unbelievable antics!
A week before Christmas, my brother Alex and his wife, Emily, arrived at our door, bundled up and looking frazzled. Their heating system had broken down, and with the cold snap, their house had become unlivable. Despite my reservations, my husband James and I welcomed them in, unaware of the chaos that would follow our kindness.

"Thanks for letting us stay," Alex said, dropping their bags in the hallway. "It looks like we’ll be here for the holidays, since we can’t find an electrician to help us, but we’ll keep trying."
"No problem," James replied, ever the gracious host. "Make yourselves comfortable."
At first, things went smoothly, but by the third day, Emily’s behavior began to get on my nerves.
She monopolized our master bathroom, leaving damp towels and toiletries everywhere, even though she had access to the guest bathroom. Worse, I noticed that some of my sweaters and clothes had mysteriously “disappeared” into her suitcase—without her asking to borrow them!

I didn’t want to cause a scene, but I couldn’t help feeling irritated. Still, none of that compared to what I discovered on Christmas Eve morning.
We were gathered for breakfast when I noticed something strange. The mantle in the living room, which we had lovingly decorated with garlands and stockings, looked... empty. My heart skipped a beat.
"Has anyone seen Mom?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly. I was referring to the black marble urn that held our mother’s ashes, which we had placed there to honor her last wish to "spend" Christmas with us.

This was going to be our first Christmas without Mom, who passed away after a brief battle with cancer. On her deathbed, she made my brother and me promise to keep her ashes with us in the same room where we celebrated Christmas so she could “be with us one more time."
After the holiday, we were supposed to scatter her ashes in her favorite spot—the local river, where she and our late father had gone on their first date. But now, she was just... gone.

Emily looked up from her plate and shrugged nonchalantly. "You mean her ashes? I threw them out in the backyard. That urn freaked me out every time I saw it!"
The room fell silent. Time seemed to freeze as her words sank in.
"You did what?!" I finally managed to choke out, my voice rising.
"I threw them out," she repeated, as if speaking about something insignificant. "Relax, it’s just ashes. Why is everyone so dramatic?"
Rage erupted inside me, and without thinking, I jumped up from my chair, ready to confront her. Alex and James quickly intervened, holding me back!
"You had no right!" I screamed, tears streaming down my face. "Mom had one wish, and you—how could you?!"

Emily rolled her eyes. "It’s not like she’s going to know," she replied.
Her indifference felt like a slap in the face! Shaking with fury, I stormed out to the backyard, praying it wasn’t too late.
I spent the next hour searching through the grass and going through the trash bin, but there wasn’t much to salvage. My mother’s ashes, her memory, were gone!
That night, I lay awake, seething with anger! I wanted to kick Emily out of the house immediately, but Alex’s pleading look at dinner stopped me.
"Just wait until after Christmas," he whispered at one point. "Please, we have nowhere else to go on such short notice."
Reluctantly, I agreed, but I wasn’t sure how I’d get through the next 24 hours without exploding.
Around midnight, a blood-curdling scream shattered the silence! James and I bolted upright, alarmed, before rushing upstairs. The smell hit us before we even reached the door to Emily and Alex’s room—a rancid stench that made my stomach turn.

"What in the world?" James muttered, covering his nose. We burst into the room to find Emily standing on the bed, clutching her hair and screaming hysterically!
The carpet, Emily’s clothes, and even some of mine were soaked in murky water, and a foul-smelling mess was oozing from the bathroom!
"Oh my God!" Emily screamed. "It’s everywhere! Do something!"
James tried to keep a straight face, but I could see the corners of his mouth twitching. "Wow," he said. "Looks like the toilet backed up."
"Why only in this room?" I added, unable to suppress a smirk. "The guest bathroom’s fine, and ours works perfectly," I said a bit too gleefully.
"Must be a Christmas miracle," my husband quipped, earning a furious glare from my sister-in-law.
Alex was crouched by the bathroom door, desperately trying to mop up the mess with a towel. "Honey, maybe we should—"
"Don’t you dare ‘honey’ me!" Emily snapped. "Do something useful for once!"

I couldn’t resist the chance to get back at her. "Maybe this is karma," I said, leaning against the doorframe. "You know, for what you did with Mom. This must be her revenge—she did have a wicked sense of humor, after all."
Emily shot me a look that could kill! "This is your house! Your plumbing! Fix it!"
James intervened before I could say anything else. "We’ll call a plumber first thing in the morning," he said calmly. "In the meantime, maybe you two should sleep in the guest room after cleaning up what you can."
"Do you think that was a sign from Mom?" I whispered to James as Emily wailed, trying to salvage what she could. "If it wasn’t, it sure feels like one."
Emily looked like she was about to explode, but Alex gently guided her out of the room.
As they passed by me, I overheard Emily muttering that it wasn’t her fault. I rolled my eyes and returned to bed, feeling an odd sense of satisfaction.
The next morning, Alex woke up first and told James and me how the toilet had backed up that night when Emily decided to use it. He had been asleep, but woke up to her screams and slipped in the mess as she jumped on the bed!
We couldn’t help but laugh at the thought of Emily slipping in that filthy muck, and Alex even joined in!
Unfortunately for Emily, her bad luck continued on Christmas Day. The plumber we called couldn’t make it until after Christmas, leaving us to spend the holiday with the faint smell of sewage hanging in the air.
When we sat down for Christmas dinner with the rest of the family—cousins, aunts, uncles, and more—Emily was unusually quiet. She picked at her food while the rest of us laughed and shared stories.
At one point, Alex pulled me aside. "Thanks for not kicking us out," he said awkwardly. "I know Emily can be... difficult."
"Difficult?" I raised an eyebrow. "Alex, she threw away Mom’s ashes!" I hissed.

"I know," he sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Believe me, I didn’t know she was going to do that. I’m so sorry."
For a moment, my anger flared again, and I thought about telling him to pack up and leave. But then I looked over at Emily. She was sitting stiffly at the table, pale and nervous, as if expecting another disaster.
"Maybe this is punishment enough," I said finally. Alex nodded, relief washing over his face.
The rest of the evening went smoothly, though Emily avoided me like the plague. When she tried to complain to the rest of the family about her ordeal, they immediately sided with me!
"You threw away their mother’s ashes?" my aunt gasped. "What were you thinking?!"
By the end of the night, Emily was thoroughly humiliated, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of poetic justice.
As James and I cleaned up after everyone had left, he gave me a sly grin. "You think Mom was with us today, even though Emily threw her out?"

I laughed, shaking my head. "If she was, it sure feels like it, and I really hope so!"
James wrapped his arm around me and kissed the top of my head. "Well, either way, Emily got what she deserved."
I nodded, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders. Mom might not have been with us in the way we had planned, but in that moment, I felt her presence more strongly than ever.
