Major Milestones and Rising Talents in Chess

In recent months, the chess world has seen a surge of young talent achieving historic milestones and reshaping expectations for the game's future.

One of the standout stories comes from India, where 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh secured a stunning victory at the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi. She defeated veteran Koneru Humpy in a thrilling final that went down to tie-breaks. Her triumph marks her as the first Indian woman to win the title and one of only a few Indian women to attain the Grandmaster title.

The win triggered celebrations across India, particularly in her hometown of Nagpur, where she was greeted as a national icon.

Another significant milestone came from Russia, where Roman Shogdzhiev made headlines by becoming the youngest International Master in chess history at just ten years old. He surpassed the previous record by several months, drawing global attention.

His earlier performances, which included victories over multiple grandmasters at age eight during the 2023 World Rapid & Blitz Championships, had already signaled his exceptional promise.

From England, Bodhana Sivanandan also broke new ground. At only ten years old, she became the youngest player in history to earn a Woman Grandmaster norm, surpassing even records set by former world champions.

Her selection to the English national team for the 2024 Chess Olympiad made her the youngest-ever Olympiad player from the country, showcasing her rising status on the global chess stage.

Turkey has seen its own prodigy rise to prominence. In 2024, Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş became the youngest player to cross the 2600 Elo rating threshold at just 13 years and four months. By mid-2025, he had already entered the top 100 players in the world—an extraordinary feat for someone so young and an indicator of his elite potential.

India also saw success at the grassroots level, with young talents shining in the 2025 World School Chess Championship held in Serbia. Seven-year-old Pragnika Vaka achieved a perfect score of 9/9 in the Girls Under-7 category, taking the gold medal. She was joined on the podium by other Indian players like Om Esh Gottumukala and Divi Bijesh, who also earned silver medals, further cementing India's place as a global chess powerhouse.

A broader look at international competitions, such as the 2025 World Rapid & Blitz Team Championships, revealed even more young players making their mark. Participants like Sarbartho Mani from India, Roman Shogdzhiev from Russia, Faustino Oro from Argentina, Deborah Quickpen from Nigeria, and Bodhana Sivanandan from England competed alongside experienced grandmasters.

Despite their age, many of these players contributed significantly to their teams, showing remarkable poise and skill under pressure.

These achievements reflect a new era in chess, where young prodigies are not only competing with, but often outperforming, established professionals. Their rapid development and international success hint at a promising and dynamic future for the game.
