Ollie’s secret: A tale of loyalty and love

A poor boy who worked in a warehouse near a closed bicycle shop noticed a scruffy dog visiting the shop every day without fail. Curious to know where the dog was going, one day he followed it and discovered a heartbreaking secret.

Chris, 18 years old, was an experienced market worker who had seen his share of street animals. But Ollie, a Shiba Inu, was very different. He was friendly, well-behaved, and too well cared for to be a street dog.

When Chris first met Ollie, he found him standing in front of the closed bicycle shop, staring intently at the large glass windows. Chris’s friends at work told him the dog belonged to the shop’s owner, who had suddenly stopped showing up for work for several weeks.

Chris felt sad every time he saw the poor dog. He loved dogs and it bothered him that someone could abandon their beloved pet on the streets and just disappear. So, one day, before heading to the café for lunch, he petted the dog's head and kindly said, “Hello, Ollie... Do you want a sandwich, dog?”

From that day on, the curious dog would run to Chris every lunch hour, wagging his tail enthusiastically when he saw Chris’s lunch box. But instead of devouring the sandwich, the dog would snatch it and disappear with the food firmly held between his jaws...

Watching Ollie run off with the food every day, then return to the same spot until closing time, left Chris both worried and curious. At first, he thought Ollie must be caring for a litter of puppies somewhere and was bringing them food. But Ollie was a male dog, and his unusual behavior didn’t quite add up.

As days passed, Chris grew more concerned as Ollie’s energy seemed to drain. The dog’s shiny coat was becoming dull, and he seemed distressed by an unknown source of pain. Chris even thought it might be because of abandonment, but he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was wrong.

“Where does he go with the food without even taking a bite?” Chris wondered.

One day, during lunch, Chris watched as Ollie wagged his tail, licking his lips with excitement at the sight of the sandwich, only to snatch it away and run off as usual. That left Chris thoughtful and even more concerned.

“If Ollie doesn’t have puppies and his owner has abandoned him, where does he take the food every day?” he suspected.

“Ollie, where are you going?” Chris called, running after the dog. But Ollie didn’t slow down or look back; he simply disappeared out of the market, leaving Chris surrounded by a cloud of dust.

“Strange dog!” Frustrated and confused, Chris shook his head and returned to work, unable to shake the image of Ollie running off with the food.

Chris’s mind was filled with thoughts of where the dog could be going every day, but he couldn’t find any clue.

When Chris finished his shift and stepped out into the cool night air to go home, he saw Ollie sitting in front of the closed bicycle shop. The dog’s eyes were fixed on the glass windows, and he let out a soft whine when he saw Chris approaching.

Chris’s heart sank as he saw the poor, lonely dog, whom he had come to care for over the past few days. The bond between them had grown stronger, and Chris realized that Ollie was more than just a strange dog.

He was a loyal and affectionate friend who had touched his heart, and seeing Ollie sitting there, alone and sad, deeply moved him. He knew he had to do something to help him.

As he walked toward Ollie, Chris made a silent promise to himself: he would never let the poor animal feel alone again. He bent down, gently petted Ollie’s head, and whispered, “You’re not alone, buddy. I’m here for you!”

Chris’s compassion and concern for Ollie led him to make a difficult decision: to take the poor dog home. However, there was a small problem: Chris shared an apartment with his girlfriend, Mila, who wasn’t too fond of animals, especially dogs.

Chris knew that adding a dog to their home was a big step and risky, and his girlfriend would probably not agree. But he couldn’t leave the poor animal on the street.

So, that night, he quietly approached the dog, offering him a treat before attaching a leash to his collar. Ollie was terrified and tried to escape, but Chris calmed him down and took him with him.

Chris’s heart raced with both joy and anxiety as he walked home with Ollie. He knew Mila wouldn’t be happy with the new addition to their home, but he trusted his decision and was determined to somehow convince her to accept the dog.

With each step, Chris promised himself that he would provide a safe shelter for Ollie. But his heart sank when he arrived home and saw the furious look on Mila’s face. Mila was livid when she saw the dog.

“What the hell is this dog doing here?” Mila shouted at Chris when she saw Ollie peeking out from behind his legs, looking at her with big, desperate brown eyes.

“Take that thing outside!” she added, backing away with disgust.

“Love, he has no one to take care of him... and he won’t hurt you, okay? Please, can we keep him? He’s abandoned, and I found him at the market... Look, he’s an amazing dog, and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with him... just give him some time, please... he needs us... he needs a loving home, and we have plenty of space in our apartment.”

But Mila was too upset and stubborn to listen.

“Do you want us to wake up to his howling in the middle of the morning, nagging us to take him for a walk, Chris? Are you crazy? You can’t bring any street dog here... This isn’t an animal shelter. We already have enough problems, we’re struggling. We can’t keep him,” Mila yelled.

“And I’m not going to wake up every morning with a bag of dog poop in my hand, waiting to pick up his fresh hot poop, okay? And this dog is going to shed hair all over the place... look at his thick fur. You know I’m allergic to dogs... and I don’t want him biting me. Look, I don’t want this dog in the house, that’s it. Take him out before I...”

“But love, Ollie isn’t dangerous. Look at how he is!” Chris pleaded as the dog softly whined behind him, his tail wrapped around his paws. Ollie was scared of Mila’s anger and felt uncomfortable watching them argue.

“He won’t bite you. Ollie is such a sweet and friendly dog, and everyone at the market loves him. Look, I know you don’t like dogs because one bit you when you were little. But that doesn’t mean all dogs are a threat... just give him a chance, and you won’t regret it... trust me.”

“Look at this! If you ask him for his paw, he gives it to you... and if you tell him to roll over, he does it... and Ollie is getting up... look, he’s getting up... he’s so obedient, and he’s not a street dog,” Chris demonstrated by giving Ollie his paw and showing other tricks to try to convince Mila to keep him.

“Yeah, whatever! And you know what? If everyone you know loves him, then let them take him. You’re wasting your time with this dog. These things only eat and sleep all the time. Don’t expect me to clean up his poop and pee, okay? If you want this dog to stay here, you’ll have to clean up all the mess, and I don’t want to see fur on my clothes. And another thing... he’s not allowed in our bedroom. I don’t want this dog near me... I’m warning you, Chris. If he makes a mess, I’ll take him out of here.”

Chris felt somewhat relieved that Mila had agreed to let the dog stay. While he was in the kitchen with his new furry friend, he couldn’t help but feel bad. He had always been a dog person, but Mila’s aversion to canines worried him. For Chris, this dog was more than just a pet. He was his best friend, who had touched his heart.

Chris had decided to do whatever it took to make things work, even if it meant sleeping on the kitchen floor with the dog for a while, until Mila changed her mind and accepted Ollie.

So that night, he slept in the kitchen with the dog curled up next to his leg, happy to have done a good deed by bringing the dog home. But that happiness lasted only one night.

“Ollie... hey, dog... come here... Where are you?” Panic rose in Chris’s chest as he looked around the kitchen and apartment for the dog. Ollie had disappeared.

He searched every corner of the kitchen and apartment but couldn’t find Ollie anywhere. The silence was deafening, and Chris’s heart sank. He couldn’t bear the thought of losing his new friend so soon.

“Did he run away? Did Mila take him when I was asleep and leave him on the street?” he thought, immediately confronting his girlfriend. But to his surprise, Mila denied the accusations and said she hadn’t seen Ollie that morning.

“Why would I get rid of him if you wanted him to stay?” Mila argued.

“Love, I know you like dogs, okay? And I don’t, but that doesn’t mean I’d get rid of something you love without telling you. You wanted him to stay, and I couldn’t do much. I don’t like dogs, but I love you, so I agreed to let him stay. I haven’t seen him since this morning... trust me, love. Maybe he ran back to where he belongs or something. I told you you were wasting your time with that dog. Now it’s your headache to find him. I have to wash the dishes, so if you don’t mind moving...”

When Mila entered the kitchen, she screamed at the top of her lungs. Her scream pierced Chris’s eardrums as he rushed inside to see what was going on.

“I told you... look what that dog did,” Mila huffed. “He stole the steak I left on the table to thaw. You brought home a four-legged thief, Chris, and you better cry about it now. I knew that dog was trouble... I knew it.”

“I’d still buy into your words about that damn dog’s loyalty if he had stolen my stupid boyfriend instead of my precious steak!” Mila burst into mocking laughter, making fun of Chris for siding with the dog the night before.

Chris’s mind started racing as Mila laughed at him for trusting Ollie. He couldn’t believe the dog had done such a thing. For a moment, he even doubted whether he had done the right thing by bringing Ollie home.

“Maybe she was right!” Chris thought, disappointed as he went to work that morning. “I shouldn’t have brought Ollie... Now she’ll never let me bring another dog home again. Thanks for doing this, Ollie... you broke my trust.”

Chris was shocked when he arrived at the market and saw Ollie standing in the same spot outside the bicycle shop. The sight of the dog stirred up his anger and regret.

As the day went on, Chris grew more irritated by Ollie’s behavior and ignored him when he approached, wagging his tail.

When lunch time came, Chris decided not to share his food with Ollie. He was still furious at the dog for stealing the steak and running away, and he couldn’t forgive him for betraying his trust.

Later that evening, Chris saw the poor dog curled up in front of the bicycle shop, looking sad and hungry. Suddenly, someone threw a loaf of bread to Ollie. Chris saw the excitement in the dog’s eyes as he quickly took the treat and ran out of the market, not even bothering to eat it. Driven by suspicion, Chris decided to follow Ollie to discover where he took the food every day.

Where does he go with the food without even trying a bite? Chris gasped as he ran after Ollie. It had been over two hours, but the dog kept trotting without stopping anywhere to try a piece of bread. Finally, Ollie slowed down as they reached a remote neighborhood on the outskirts of town.

What’s he doing here... so far? Chris panted as he followed the dog to see where he was going.

Then he saw Ollie heading towards a house surrounded by several sheds at the end of an alley. The house appeared abandoned, and Chris couldn’t understand what the dog was doing there or for whom he was bringing food every day.

Chris’s heavy footsteps on the rubble distracted Ollie. But the dog didn’t bother to wait. He wagged his tail faintly and squeezed through a hole under a wire fence, crossing to the other side of the property.

What do you have there, Ollie? Chris tensed as he climbed over the fence and landed on the property, following the dog to the house.

“Hey, boy... why are you digging under the door?” Chris called to Ollie again, but the dog was busy digging a hole under the door. The door was locked, and Chris thought Ollie was trying to break through.

Moments later, Chris couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed. Ollie placed the bread in the small hole he had dug while another dog began barking furiously from the other side, scratching at the door.

Oh my God! So you’ve been bringing food for your trapped friend! Chris exclaimed as Ollie whimpered softly and wagged his tail, staring at him intently.

Chris heard the German Shepherd barking angrily, and it was clear the dog was distressed. He knew he had to act fast, so he knocked on the door, shouting to the owner over and over. But there was no response.

How strange... Where has the owner gone, and why is this poor dog trapped inside the house? Who locked him in there? Chris wondered as he searched the area for any clue.

“Hello...? Is anyone... hello...?” Chris shouted in the garden, but there was no one. The sheds seemed abandoned, and the house itself looked like it had been empty for a long time. Then he heard footsteps from inside the house.

“Chris? What are you doing here?” a voice shouted behind him.

Chris turned quickly, startled, as a tall man emerged from behind the sheds. “Who are you? Why is this dog trapped inside?” Chris demanded.

The man looked at him with wide eyes and sighed.

“You must be the one who followed Ollie.” He laughed nervously. “I suppose I owe you an explanation. Let me tell you what happened.”
