The call that changed everything

While my husband was away on a so-called business trip, our landline rang—for the first time in months. I nearly ignored it… until I heard the voicemail. A woman’s voice I didn’t recognize. A desperate message. And one sentence that froze my heart. In that moment, everything in my life changed.

You know those things in your house no one uses anymore? I’m sure everyone has a few. For us, it was the landline.

It had become a running joke between my husband and me. Only telemarketers or scammers ever called it, and we used to mess with them just for fun.

Our marriage, overall, was filled with laughter. Peter and I had done amateur comedy in college, so teasing each other was part of our rhythm. And I loved it. I married my best friend, someone I adored completely.

Everything between us seemed perfect. Sure, Peter could be a little immature at times, but I didn’t mind taking on more responsibility when needed. Things were good… except for one thing.

We couldn’t have children.

No matter how hard we tried, nothing ever happened. We saw doctors, did endless tests—and all of them said the same thing: we were both perfectly healthy.

Eventually, I started to believe maybe the universe just didn’t want me to be a mother. That maybe I didn’t deserve it.

But Peter never gave up hope. He always said things would work out, that we’d get there.

Still, the last test hit differently. Peter had left on a work trip—which was odd, considering his job didn’t really require travel.

He said it was a new company policy, that he’d need to start traveling more often.

The timing couldn’t have been worse. Because once again, that stupid test showed a single line. Not pregnant. And this time, I was completely alone.

Peter had already been gone for two days and wouldn’t be back for three more. So I did what I always did: drowned my disappointment in ice cream and a '90s rom-com.

I headed to the kitchen for the ice cream, and just then… the landline rang.

Another scammer, probably. I wasn’t in the mood. I answered with a low growl and muttered, “Go to hell,” before hanging up.

But something caught my attention—the voicemail light was blinking. I hit play.

“Peter, hey. I know you told me not to call your house, but I haven’t been able to reach you. You were supposed to be here yesterday, and now you’re just ignoring me. He is waiting…”

“What the hell?” I said out loud.

I redialed the number, and a woman answered almost immediately.

“Peter? Is that you? Why didn’t you come?”

“Who are you?” I asked coldly.

“Oh… I’m sorry,” she stammered, and hung up.

I tried calling back, but she didn’t answer again. If she hadn’t sounded so panicked, I might’ve believed she was a coworker of Peter’s. But like this… I had to find out the truth.

I wrote the number down and opened my laptop. Every woman has a little detective in her—we will find what we need.

Within minutes, I had a name: Olivia. I even found her social media.

I started scrolling through her photos, looking for Peter. He wasn’t in any of them. Just Olivia… and a little boy. Maybe three years old. His name was Hunter.

I didn’t recognize Olivia. But Hunter… something about him felt familiar, even if I couldn’t explain why.

She worked as a florist in a town four hours away. If she wouldn’t talk on the phone, we’d talk in person.

Just to be sure something was really off, I called Peter’s boss to ask about the “business trip.” Just as I suspected—there was no such trip.

I packed a bag and hit the road.

I arrived at the flower shop just as Olivia was closing up. I stayed in the car, watching. When she locked the door, I approached.

“Olivia, hi. You called my house. I need to know who you are,” I said.

Her face went pale instantly.

“I’m sorry, you must be mistaken,” she said quickly, trying to walk away.

“Please. I need the truth. Woman to woman… how would you feel?” I called after her, and she stopped.

She turned and came back.

“I don’t want drama. I have a son. I already regret getting him involved,” she whispered.

“No drama, I promise. Just the truth,” I assured her, and she nodded.

She invited me to her home. We drove there in my car. Inside, I saw Hunter with a woman who turned out to be his babysitter. Olivia led me into the kitchen and closed the door.

“Oh God… I don’t even know where to begin,” she whispered. “You’re his wife… and I…”

“Just say it. Believe me, after years of negative pregnancy tests, I don’t break that easily.”

“Oh God… that makes this even worse,” she said, guilt written all over her face. “Okay. Peter is Hunter’s father.”

“What…?”

“But we were never a couple. It was just one night. I only wanted Hunter to know who his dad was.”

“You got pregnant from one night?” I asked, stunned.

“I’m so, so sorry. I didn’t know he was married. He took off his ring. He only told me the truth after I said I was pregnant,” she confessed.

“And then he just abandoned his kid?” I demanded.

“I tried to get them to meet. But he kept avoiding it. Then he said he was ready—and vanished again. And I already told Hunter about him… I hate myself for that,” she said, shaking.

“He doesn’t even know what responsibility means. What an asshole!” I shouted.

“I never asked for money. I just wanted Hunter to have a father,” Olivia said softly.

“What? No, no. That idiot is going to pay for everything—and step up.”

“I don’t want a fight or some big mess,” she said nervously.

I took her hand.

“You’re not alone anymore. We’re going to face him—together,” I promised. She nodded, still unsure.

Suddenly, Hunter peeked into the kitchen.

“Is Daddy not coming?”

I saw the pain on Olivia’s face. So I stepped in.

“Sadly no, sweetie. But he’s going to buy you so many toys, you won’t even know what to do with them,” I smiled.

“Yay!” he shouted and ran off.

“Thank you,” Olivia whispered. I just nodded.

Three days later, Peter came home. I was already waiting—with my surprise.

“How was the trip?” I asked as he walked into the bedroom.

“All good,” he said casually.

“You didn’t miss any meetings or have to cancel anything?” I pressed.

“Nope. Everything went according to plan,” he shrugged.

“Oh, really? Then how do you explain that we’ve been trying for a baby for over a year with no luck… but another woman got pregnant from you in one night?”

“What? How did you…?”

“Doesn’t matter. What matters is I’ve met your son. Unlike you. And thank God, he doesn’t look a thing like you.”

“I can explain,” he pleaded.

“Oh? Are you starting with the cheating or with the part where you abandoned your kid?”

“It wasn’t that big a deal. Just a couple of times,” he said defensively.

“So there were others?” I yelled.

“Uhh…”

“You’re a real piece of work.”

“What was I supposed to do—bring the kid here?”

“YES! Be honest! Take responsibility!”

“I don’t even want kids! If I did, I wouldn’t have been slipping birth control into your tea,” he blurted.

It felt like lightning struck me.

“You… what?” I whispered, frozen.

“You were desperate for a baby, and I wasn’t… I didn’t know what else to do,” he said.

“You knew how much I wanted to be a mom. How I blamed myself for not getting pregnant. And this whole time… it was you?” I said through tears.

“I didn’t want to lose you,” he mumbled.

“You didn’t want to lose me? So you lied to me, drugged me, cheated on me? I thought I knew you. But I was wrong. You’re a complete stranger.”

“Vanessa, we can fix this,” he begged.

“It’s too late. I filed for divorce. And I made sure Olivia files for child support. So get ready. Your life’s about to become hell.”

“You can’t do this to me!” Peter shouted.

“You did it to yourself. Now get out of my house, or I’m calling the cops.”

“And tell them what? I’m still your husband!”

“Don’t worry. I have a good imagination. One way or another, you’re spending tonight in a cell,” I said calmly.

I saw it in his eyes—rage, shame, the urge to scream. But for the first time in his life, Peter made the right choice. He walked away. The door closed behind him. Silence returned.

I collapsed onto the bed, exhaling a breath I felt like I’d been holding for years. He was going to get exactly what he deserved.

And me? I was finally going to do what he never could—be present. For Olivia. For Hunter. For myself.
