The garage exile: A mother's endurance amid betrayal and loss
A son disappears, and his wife forces his mother to live in the garage.
An elderly woman's only son got married and moved into her home with his new wife. But when his company sent him away for several months, her daughter-in-law forced her to live in the garage.
When Beatrice Fairman's son, Matthew, got married, he asked if he and his new wife, Rita, could move into the spacious five-bedroom house where he had grown up. Beatrice, who was feeling a bit lonely and liked her new daughter-in-law, happily agreed.
She never imagined that what started as a happy arrangement would turn into a nightmare—her beloved son vanishing without a trace and Rita revealing her true, cruel nature by kicking Beatrice out of her own home.

Matthew and Rita moved in right after their honeymoon. At first, the three of them lived very happily together. Since both Matthew and Rita worked, Beatrice, who was retired, took care of the cooking.
The arrangement worked perfectly for the young couple. They were saving money for their own house and living comfortably. Beatrice, for her part, was delighted to have her son home and became close friends with Rita.
But everything changed when Matthew got promoted, and his company asked him to travel internationally for weeks at a time. For Rita, Beatrice’s presence was a comfort that kept her from feeling lonely.
The two women waited patiently for Matt’s return and talked to him on Skype every day. Then came the news that Matt had to transfer to the London office for six months. Both women were understandably worried.
“Listen, Rita, Mom,” Matt said gently. “I know it’s going to be hard being apart for so long, but after this, they promised me a promotion at the head office—and no more traveling. You two can keep each other company in the meantime…”
Rita broke down crying. “Matt, we’ve been apart more than together since we got married!”
Beatrice agreed. “Matt, darling, you know I adore you, but Rita’s right. She needs *you*, not me.”
“Mom, please,” Matt said, frustrated. “I have to do this so we can afford our own place! We all have to make sacrifices—and believe me, I’m not enjoying this either!”
Two weeks later, Matt left, and the two women were left behind. They missed him deeply. At first, Matt video-called every night and seemed cheerful. But gradually, things changed.

The calls became shorter and less frequent. First, they came every other day, then once a week—then none at all. One week passed without a call. Then two.
Worried, Rita and Beatrice tried calling Matt’s phone and hotel, but got no response. Finally, Rita called his boss.
“Matt?” the boss said, surprised. “He left London two weeks ago. He worked like crazy and finished the project in three months. He said he was desperate to get home…”
Rita hung up, pale and shaking. “Beatrice… they said he *left*—but he never came home!”
They contacted airlines, only to find out Matt never boarded his flight. British police had no leads. Matt had vanished.
Beatrice turned to prayer. Rita, however, grew angrier and began lashing out at Beatrice.
“YOUR son abandoned me!” she yelled. “He must have told *you* where he went!”
“No, Rita,” Beatrice said gently. “I promise—”

“PROMISES?” Rita screamed. “I believed Matt’s promises, and now I’m stuck here with an old woman! It’s been three months. I won’t wait forever!”
That night, Rita put on makeup and bright red lipstick.
“Where are you going?” Beatrice asked, surprised.
“*OUT!*” Rita shouted. “To find a man who actually wants me!”
That was the first of many nights Rita spent out. Soon, she brought home a tall, dark-haired man named Bill.
When Beatrice objected, Rita snapped. “Matt left me! I don’t owe him anything—and Bill *loves* me. So shut up, old lady!”
The next day, Beatrice found her belongings piled by the front door.
“What’s going on?” she cried.
“You’re moving into the garage,” Rita said coldly. “I need space to host my friends. And Bill’s moving in—we need privacy.”
No matter how much Beatrice begged, Rita wouldn’t budge. The elderly woman was forced to live in the dusty, moldy garage.
Beatrice had never been so miserable. Her son was missing, and the woman she had welcomed into her home now treated her like a servant. But just when things seemed darkest, a miracle happened.
One sunny afternoon, Beatrice sat outside the garage when a car pulled up—and a familiar figure stepped out.
“Matt!” she cried. “Is it really you? I thought you were dead!”
“Mama,” Matt smiled, running to hug her. “Didn’t you get my messages?”
Beatrice shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “No! We’ve been waiting for three months…”
“Oh no,” Matt said. “The hospital was supposed to contact you. I had a terrible accident—I’ve been recovering, but I’m okay now. Poor Rita must be so worried!” He looked at his mother’s face. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t live in the house anymore,” Beatrice said quietly. “I sleep in the garage. Rita moved her boyfriend in…”
“*She did what?!*” Matt exploded. “I’ll take care of this—now.”
He stormed to the front door and flung it open. Inside, he came face-to-face with Rita and her new boyfriend. Rita’s mouth dropped open.
“Matt! You’re alive!”
“Yes,” he said coldly. “But I’m not *your* darling anymore. Pack your things and get out of my mother’s house. I never want to see you again.”

Rita sobbed and begged, but Matt refused to listen. She left with Bill, and Matt was heartbroken to learn how his mother had suffered.
He did everything he could to make it up to her—but for Beatrice, just having her son alive, well, and back in her arms was the greatest gift of all.
What Can We Learn From This Story?
Love is patient and loyal. If Rita had truly loved Matt, she would have waited for him patiently like his mother did and honored her vows.
Abusers prey on those they think are weak. Rita mistreated Beatrice because she believed Matt was gone for good and no one was there to protect her.
