The mysterious disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki
The search continues for 20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student who disappeared on March 6 while on a spring break trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Konanki was last seen at the Riu República Resort’s beach around 4:15 a.m. Surveillance footage captured her and five female friends, along with two men, entering the beach area after spending time in the hotel’s lobby.
About 40 minutes later, five of the women and one man were seen leaving, while Konanki remained behind with a man in his 20s. Hours later, the man was recorded leaving the beach just before 9 a.m., but Konanki was not seen again.
Authorities from the Dominican Republic, the United States, and India—where Konanki’s family is originally from—have been conducting an extensive search by air, land, and sea.
Her sarong-style cover-up was found on a lounge chair, but there were no signs of violence. Investigators have spoken with the man who was last seen with her.
He recalled going into the water, feeling unwell, and later waking up on the beach before leaving. He stated that when he last saw Konanki, she was standing in the shallow water.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed he is cooperating with the investigation and is not considered a suspect.
New information has revealed that other individuals were present on the beach around the time Konanki disappeared, and investigators are working to identify them.
Officials have urged these individuals to come forward with any information that could aid the search. Meanwhile, concerns over dangerous sea conditions have been raised, as strong currents and high waves were reported on the night of her disappearance.
Nearly two months earlier, four tourists drowned at the same beach after being swept away by powerful currents.
Despite an intensive search effort utilizing helicopters, drones, and search dogs, Konanki’s whereabouts remain unknown, leaving her family and authorities desperately seeking answers.
