The price of honesty: A fight for survival

Billy pays a high price for his honesty and is fired just two hours after being hired. Not knowing how he will pay for his wife's urgent surgery, Billy finds $70,000 and a chilling note in his mailbox the next day.

It was Billy's first day at work. The 70-year-old veteran was smiling warmly as he walked down the aisles, organizing the new merchandise. Suddenly, a customer dressed in a sharp suit approached the counter and distracted him.

"Excuse me, can you tell me how much this toy costs?" the man asked the manager, pointing to a box marked as "limited edition." "I forgot my glasses at the office and can't see clearly."

"Sure, it costs $800, sir," the manager replied.

Billy was stunned. He had just placed those toys and was sure they cost only $200. Upon checking the price, he confirmed he was right.

"Excuse me, sir, but I think there’s been a mistake," Billy said, approaching the manager. "This toy costs only $200, not $800."

The manager frowned and shot Billy a furious glare.

"You're new here and still learning," he said to the customer. "The toy costs $800, sir. It's from a limited edition collection."

Billy realized the manager was trying to scam the customer. He couldn't confront him openly, but he couldn't let an innocent person be overcharged either. So, he told the customer that the manager probably had confused the prices due to the volume of items they handled every day.

The manager didn't like that one bit.

"Is that how you thank me for giving you a job when no one else would? I can't believe you're discrediting me in front of customers on your first day! Get out of here! You're fired!"

Billy, devastated, left the store. He didn’t know what to do or how he would pay for his wife’s urgent treatment. He walked the streets, trying his luck in stores and cafés with "Hiring" signs, but luck wasn’t on his side. Still, he remained hopeful he would find something soon.

The next day, Billy went to check his mailbox with little expectation. But his curiosity was piqued when he found a thick brown envelope with no sender, marked with the words "For Billy" written in large letters.

He carefully opened it, and his eyes widened in horror when he saw what was inside: a large bundle of cash. "Is this real?" he whispered. Inside was a note:

"The $70,000 is for your wife’s treatment, Billy. It’s yours. But you can get much more. You have the chance to earn $500,000. Come to the park tonight at midnight. Alone."

Billy ran home with the money and counted it: it was indeed $70,000. He immediately called his wife’s doctor. He finally had the money for her organ transplant. But there was bad news waiting for him.

"The prices have gone up this week, Billy," the doctor said. "You need another $30,000. We don’t have much time. I’m sorry."

Billy collapsed on the couch. He knew he had no choice but to accept the strange invitation.

That night, Billy went to the deserted park. Everything was eerily quiet, and there was no soul in sight until a pair of blinding headlights broke the darkness from behind, startling him.

Before he could turn around to see what was going on, a hooded and masked figure emerged from the shadows and placed a black bag over his head.

"Let me go! Hey!" Billy shouted, trying to break free, but his screams went unheard.

Two hands grabbed him tightly by the arms and pushed him into a van. He heard the engine roar to life, and he knew they were taking him somewhere. He felt what seemed like a weapon pressed against his side, so he didn’t dare speak. He was wedged between two men who said nothing.

After what seemed like an eternity, the vehicle stopped. They guided him into an abandoned building. When they removed the bag from his head, his eyes took a moment to adjust to the dim light, but he quickly realized he was inside an old factory.

The men stepped back, and the door closed behind them. Billy looked around, and his jaw dropped: there were nine other people in the room. Along one wall, ten beds were perfectly lined up, each with a folded black uniform on top. Suddenly, a deep, chilling voice echoed through a speaker in the wall:

"All of you are here because you're in desperate situations and need money. Our goal is to see how far you are willing to go to get it. Put on the uniforms and get ready! The first trial will begin soon!"

Billy’s mind raced. He knew he couldn’t escape: the door was locked, and there were no windows. He looked at the others and saw the same fear and confusion reflected in their eyes.

No one knew the time; their phones and watches had been taken. A couple of hours passed until the metal door opened. A man in a suit and gas mask entered the room.

"Get up and follow me," the voice ordered.

Billy understood that the masked man was only a supervisor, not the organizer of the game.

"Where are we being taken?" Billy whispered to another participant, but no one had answers.

Soon, they were led into a dimly lit room where their right hands were chained to a wall.

"Welcome to your first task!" the chilling voice said. "Find your key and free yourself in ten minutes, or face the consequences. The time starts in three… two… one… go!"

There were nearly a thousand keys hanging from hooks on a wooden board in front of them. They had only ten minutes to find the correct one.

Billy’s soldier instincts kicked in. Seeing the chaos in the room, he gave instructions:

"Take a key each and pass it along. If it doesn't work, leave it in the center. That way, we discard the ones that don't work and find the right one faster."

They formed a circle and began passing the keys under mounting tension. Five minutes passed. Four participants managed to free themselves. The circle broke, making the task harder for those remaining.

"Four minutes left! Faster!" the voice urged.

Three more were freed and rushed out of the room.

Billy was left with an elderly man and a woman, still desperately searching for their keys.

"Who will make it out?" the voice asked in a macabre tone, as the hearts of the three beat fast.

With one minute left, Billy finally found his key and freed himself. But instead of leaving, he decided to stay and help the others.

They managed to free the elderly man. He and Billy frantically searched for the woman’s key when a deafening siren blared throughout the room.

The supervisor reappeared, and the voice ordered Billy and the elderly man to leave the room immediately.

The metal door slammed shut behind them. Seconds later, a gunshot echoed down the hallway.

"What was that?" one of the participants screamed, horrified.

"They… they shot her!" stammered another. Chaos erupted. Everyone was screaming, protesting, desperately trying to find an exit, but without success.

They were locked in again. This time, a supervisor stayed to guard them. At that moment, everyone realized they were trapped in a twisted survival game… and only one of the nine remaining would leave alive.

Billy got up from his bed and crossed the room with determination, but a guard stopped him.

"Where are you going?" he growled.

"I need to use the bathroom," Billy replied, and the guard followed him.

Billy knew this was his chance. As he entered the narrow bathroom, he turned on the faucet to make noise, took off his shoes, and neatly placed them in his stall. Then, he crawled to the neighboring stall.

"Hurry up, old man," the guard grumbled impatiently, and began banging on the door.

Billy didn’t respond. Minutes passed, and the guard, now suspicious, crouched down to look under the door. Seeing only the shoes, he entered cautiously.

At that moment, Billy emerged from the neighboring stall and attacked him by surprise. He slammed the guard against the wall. The guard fell unconscious to the floor, though still alive.

Without wasting time, Billy put on the guard’s uniform, handcuffed him with his own restraints, donned the mask, and left the bathroom.

Using the guard’s access card, he walked down the hall looking for an exit. Suddenly, another guard intercepted him.

"Hey, where do you think you’re going?" he asked.

Billy improvised:

"The boss asked me to inspect the building and report any anomalies… if there are any."

"Anomalies? What kind of anomalies? Did he say anything specific?"

"I'm not sure, I just know it’s a direct order," Billy replied, nervous but convincing.

The guard let him pass. Billy, still stunned by his luck, continued until he found a poorly lit office. He entered… and froze.

The surveillance cameras showed that they had already found the guard tied up in the bathroom. They were looking for him.

With his heart racing, Billy spotted a phone. He finally saw an old one on a cluttered desk. He dialed the police just as the door swung open.

Billy froze when he saw who entered: it was the customer from the store, the one with the vision problem!

"Why are you doing this? What do you want?" Billy asked.

The man smiled cynically.

"You’re very curious, Billy! Let me explain. We are nothing but pieces in a survival game… run by the rich elite, people who’ve seen it all and now seek pleasure in human despair."

"The participants were carefully selected… desperate souls like you. You want money for your wife’s surgery, don’t you? This is a competition to survive, Billy. Only one lives in the end. Put down that phone and I’ll give you another $250,000. And you can go home. You can’t beat the system! Guards!"

Just as they were about to grab Billy, police sirens flooded the air. The call had been heard.

Special forces surrounded the factory, freed the hostages, and confiscated evidence about the game’s organizers.

"Can you tell me how you ended up here?" an officer asked.

Billy recounted everything that had happened. Days later, while waiting for news about his wife outside the hospital, the same officer approached him.

"We have good news, Billy. We located the perpetrators. And you risked your life for those eight people. Good deeds generate good, Billy... so I’ll take care of your wife’s surgery."

Billy couldn’t believe it. With tears in his eyes, he thanked him with all his heart.
