When trust becomes a test: The wife used as an experiment

When I decided to surprise my husband by bringing him the lunch he had forgotten, I never imagined I was walking straight into a nightmare. Seeing my own face projected on one of his lecture slides, described in degrading terms, made it painfully clear—our marriage would never be the same again.

My name is Janet, and my husband, Mark, is a psychology professor at the local university. We've been married for ten years. Mark can be absent-minded—he often forgets his lunch. This morning was no exception.

“You forgot your lunch again,” I said with a sigh, holding out the brown paper bag.

“Sorry, love,” he murmured, already lost in his notes.

Since I had the day off, I decided to drop it off. It was a simple gesture—I thought it might brighten his day. I had no idea I was about to uncover something devastating.

The campus was buzzing with students hurrying to their classes. The sun was shining, and the air was filled with laughter and chatter. As I walked across the grounds with Mark’s lunch in hand, I felt a mix of nostalgia and curiosity.

I found the right auditorium and peeked inside. Mark was still lecturing. He hadn’t noticed me, so I quietly slipped in and took a seat at the back. It had been a while since I’d seen him in his professional element, and I thought it might be fun.

The room was large, with tiered seating leading down to the stage. The students seemed focused, their eyes locked on Mark. I settled in, trying to stay unnoticed.

He was discussing psychological experiments, projecting slides of various studies. He looked confident and energized, his voice steady and clear.

“To illustrate this concept, I recreated the experiment with my wife,” he said suddenly.

I froze. What did he just say?

“Our subject, Janet, has an average IQ and the social awareness of a teenager. Testing this theory on her was easy. Let’s watch this video, and then we’ll discuss.”

My face appeared on the screen, accompanied by humiliating descriptions. I felt the world collapse around me. I couldn’t believe it. My own husband had used me in an experiment—without my consent.

The video showed me recounting a supposed childhood memory about getting lost in a shopping mall. But it never happened. I watched in horror as the video played on, spliced with clips of our private conversations. Mark had been planting that false memory in my mind for weeks.

A wave of anger, betrayal, and shame hit me all at once. How could he do this to me? How could he expose me like this?

When the video ended, the students began asking questions. My heart pounded. I couldn’t stay silent any longer. I raised my hand, my voice trembling with fury:

“What would happen if your wife found out you used her as a guinea pig? How do you think she’d react?”

All heads turned. Mark’s face went pale. He recognized my voice and spotted me in the back. His confident demeanor crumbled.

“Janet, I…”

“She’d understand that I love her, and I did it for science—for education. She should feel honored to be part of the process,” he stammered, trying to hold it together.

“Honored?” I said, my voice rising. “You humiliated me, betrayed my trust, and turned our relationship into an experiment. Do you really think that’s something to be proud of?”

The room fell into dead silence. Mark looked like a deer caught in headlights.

“You never asked for my consent. You never considered how I’d feel. You manipulated me for your own purposes. What kind of person does that?”

Mark hung his head, clearly shaken. He took a deep breath and tried to explain.

“The experiment was about the implantation of false memories. It’s a psychological phenomenon where suggestive information can create memories of events that never actually happened. Over the past few weeks, I subtly suggested a fabricated story to Janet—about her getting lost in a mall as a child.”

He turned to the students.

“I embedded these suggestions in our daily conversations and texts until the memory seemed real to her. The video shows her recounting it in vivid detail. It’s a powerful demonstration of how malleable our memories can be.”

I was still burning with anger. “You tricked me into believing something that never happened? Just for a class experiment?”

“Janet, it wasn’t just a trick. It’s a significant scientific finding. The messages, the video—they show how easily memories can be altered. It has real implications for understanding the human mind.”

“And at what cost, Mark?” I said, my voice cracking. “You used me without permission. You made me doubt my own memory. How could you do that to someone you claim to love?”

Mark’s face was ashen.

“I didn’t think it would hurt you this much. I thought you'd see the bigger picture.”

I couldn’t believe his audacity.

“See the bigger picture?” I shouted. “The bigger picture is that you used me as a lab rat. You didn’t even stop to think about how it would affect our relationship.”

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself.

“Ask yourself what kind of person does this to their partner. Because right now, I don’t recognize the man I married.”

The room was absolutely still. Mark looked like he wanted to disappear. I couldn’t stay there another second.

I stood and walked out of the auditorium, my heart pounding. I could feel everyone’s eyes on me, but I didn’t care. The betrayal was too deep, the pain too raw.

Outside, I took several deep breaths. My mind was racing. How could he do this to me? How do you justify using your own spouse in an experiment like that?

As I walked toward the car, I thought about our marriage. Trust is the foundation of any relationship, and Mark had shattered it. This wasn’t just public humiliation—it was personal betrayal.

Could our marriage survive this? Did I even want it to?

Those questions circled in my mind as I drove home. The man I thought I knew had shown me a side I never imagined, and I was left questioning everything.
