From trunk sales to global triumph: The inspiring journey of Nike

One of his notable innovations involved pouring rubber into his wife’s waffle iron to create a unique tread pattern, which would later influence Nike’s shoe sole designs.

In 1971, Blue Ribbon Sports made the bold decision to create its own line of footwear and rebranded itself as Nike, a name inspired by the Greek goddess of victory to symbolize speed and triumph.

The now-famous Swoosh logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student, for just $35. Though simple, the logo has become one of the most powerful and recognizable brand symbols in the world.

Nike’s first shoe, the Cortez, was launched in 1972 and was designed with the goal of providing runners with superior comfort and durability. The shoe gained quick popularity and became emblematic of the running craze that was sweeping the United States during that era.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Nike experienced rapid growth by introducing innovative products and pioneering marketing strategies. The company was one of the earliest to heavily invest in athlete endorsements, signing iconic sports figures such as Steve Prefontaine, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Serena Williams, which helped cement its position in the athletic market.

Nike’s introduction of Air technology in the late 1980s marked a major breakthrough in athletic footwear. The Air Max line, featuring visible air cushioning units, provided athletes with improved comfort and performance, further distinguishing Nike as a leader in sports technology.

Today, Nike stands as a global leader in sportswear and footwear, generating tens of billions in revenue and catering to both professional athletes and casual consumers.
