Lola, the four-legged angel who saved my life

When I turned 65, it felt as though my life had lost its purpose. I had spent decades focusing on work, family, and my marriage, believing I was building a stable future. But then, everything fell apart.

I lost the job I thought would carry me through to retirement. It ended abruptly, with no explanation—just a quick handshake and a cold "thank you for your years of service." As if all the love and effort I had put into that job didn’t matter at all.

Not long after, I discovered my husband, the man I had shared thirty years with, had found someone else. A younger woman, full of energy—someone who made him feel alive again. As if the woman who had stood by him for so long wasn’t enough anymore. He left without hesitation.

My children didn’t offer much comfort either. At first, they expressed shock, but soon enough, they began to suggest that perhaps it was my fault. "Mom, you let yourself go," they said. "It’s no wonder he found someone else."

That was crushing.

I spent weeks in bed, unable to eat, too weak to even open the curtains. The world outside felt cold, distant, and indifferent to my suffering. I began to wonder if it was even worth carrying on.

Then, one cold night, everything changed.

As I was stepping out to grab a few items from the store, I heard a faint whimper coming from under my car. I knelt down and saw a tiny, shivering puppy curled up by the tire, trying to stay warm. Her eyes were wide with fear, and her fragile body seemed to be fighting the cold.

I didn’t know what to do. I could barely take care of myself—how could I care for a puppy? But something in her eyes made me hesitate. She was alone, just like me.

I scooped her up, feeling the warmth of her tiny body against mine. She smelled of rain and dust, but that scent somehow brought me comfort.

I brought her inside, wrapped her in a towel, and warmed up some milk for her. I stayed with her all night, making sure she was comfortable. For the first time in ages, I wasn’t alone.

I named her Lola, after my mother, who had always been a pillar of strength and love in my life. And slowly, this little puppy began to save me in ways I never imagined.

In the early days, the sadness still weighed heavily on me, but Lola wouldn’t let me stay down. She woke me up every morning, jumping on the bed and licking my face. When I cried, she curled up next to me, resting her paw on my lap, as if saying, "I’m here for you."

Over time, I found myself going out more to take her on walks. The neighbors started noticing, greeting me with smiles, asking about Lola, commenting on how adorable she was. For the first time in months, I felt part of the world again.

Gradually, I started rebuilding my life. I found a part-time job at a bookstore, something peaceful that made me feel good. I made new friends and even started reconnecting with people from my past.

My children took a while to come around, but when they saw me smiling again, they began to realize they had been too harsh with me. Time healed some wounds between us, and though our relationship would never be the same, we found a way to reconnect.

Lola grew, but she remained my constant companion. Every day, after a long walk, when she rested her head in my lap, I knew she understood the impact she had on my life.

She didn’t just save me that cold night. She saved me every day after that, reminding me that love can come in the most unexpected forms, and that even in our darkest times, there’s always light waiting to guide us back.
