Miley Cyrus opens up about rare condition and health struggles at 32
At 32 years old, Miley Cyrus has shared details about a health condition that has greatly affected her singing career.
During a recent interview on Apple Music’s "The Zane Lowe Show," she disclosed that she has Reinke's edema, a rare disorder causing swelling of the vocal cords due to a sizable polyp.

This condition is the reason behind her signature raspy voice but also makes performing live very strenuous.
Cyrus described the challenge of singing with this condition as similar to "running a marathon with ankle weights," highlighting how physically demanding it is.
Despite the difficulties, she views the condition as a unique gift because it gives her voice a distinct sound.

Rather than opting for surgery to remove the polyp, Miley has chosen to keep it intact, worried that an operation might change her recognizable vocal tone.
This decision has led her to limit her touring schedule, as she insists on performing live and refuses to lip-sync, which she feels would be harmful to her voice in the long run.
In addition to Reinke’s edema, Cyrus has faced other health challenges recently. She was hospitalized after suffering a serious leg infection while shooting the music video for her song "Walk of Fame," which required a brief stay in intensive care. She has also dealt with a ruptured ovarian cyst that forced her to miss a New Year’s Eve show.

Despite these setbacks, Miley is preparing to release her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, scheduled for May 30, 2025.
The album is a visual and musical exploration of healing and discovering beauty even during the darkest periods of life.
