The $500 girlfriend: How one lie nearly ruined my career

When a stunning stranger offered me $500 to pretend to be her boyfriend for three hours, I thought it was easy money. I had no idea saying yes would pull me into a web of manipulation that nearly destroyed everything I'd worked for.

My name is Anthony, and until six months ago, I thought I had my life completely under control.

I had a solid job at a mid-sized marketing firm, a small apartment I could afford, and—most importantly—enough income to support my aging mother, who struggles with health issues. She gave everything for me after my dad walked out on us when I was 12.

Now it was my turn to take care of her.

While most men my age were getting married and starting families, I focused on climbing the career ladder.

Every morning, I was up by six, fueled by coffee, diving into work. My coworkers often invited me out for drinks, but I usually declined. I had goals, deadlines, and a promotion to win.

“You need to get out more, Anthony,” my colleague Jake would say almost daily. “You’re 32. When’s the last time you even went on a date?”

I’d just shrug and say I was too busy.

The truth was, I didn’t have time for relationships. Between work and helping my mom with medical bills, dating felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford. And honestly, I liked my routine: work hard, save money, build a future.

It was simple. And safe.

My boss, David, had noticed my dedication.

Months earlier, he’d pulled me aside and hinted there might soon be an opening in management. That one conversation fueled me through long nights and stressful deadlines.

This job was my ticket to financial security—for both me and my mom.

I loved what I did. Marketing strategy came naturally to me, and seeing a campaign succeed gave me real satisfaction. My colleagues respected me, and I had strong relationships with our clients.

Everything was going according to plan.

Until one Saturday afternoon in late September.

I was at my favorite café, catching up on industry articles and enjoying my only day off, when my perfectly ordered world unraveled.

That’s when I met Meredith.

I was halfway through an article on digital trends when someone approached my table.

I looked up and saw a woman who looked like she’d stepped out of a magazine—long auburn hair, bright green eyes, and a smile that could stop traffic.

“Hi, I’m Meredith,” she said, sliding into the seat across from me without asking. “Want to make \$500 for three hours of your time?”

I almost choked on my coffee. My brain scrambled to make sense of what I’d just heard. Gorgeous women don’t walk up to strangers in cafés offering money. It had to be a scam… or something worse.

“Sorry… what?” I managed, my hands shaking as I set down my cup.

She leaned in, all business.

“I need a fake boyfriend for lunch. Three hours, tops. I’ll pay you in cash.”

Now I was truly confused. “And the catch?”

“My dad’s insanely strict and obsessed with finding me a husband. I got tired of the pressure, so I told him I already had a boyfriend. The guy who was supposed to help me bailed last minute, and now I need a replacement for lunch with my parents.”

I looked at her like she’d just said she was from Mars. It was, hands down, the weirdest conversation I’d ever had with a stranger.

“I know it sounds crazy,” she added, “but I’m desperate. It’s just lunch. We pretend to be dating, and you walk away $500 richer. That’s it.”

I hesitated. Every logical part of me screamed this was a terrible idea. But then she smiled again and said:

“I picked you because you’re handsome and look trustworthy. Plus, you’ve got the kind of clean-cut look my parents would approve of.”

Flattery and $500? My resolve began to crumble. That money could cover two months of my mom’s physical therapy.

Against my better judgment, I heard myself say:

“Okay. But just this once.”

Her face lit up.

“Perfect! Lunch is in an hour. We should walk there together so it feels more natural.”

The restaurant was only a few blocks away, but those 15 minutes felt eternal. Meredith chatted about the weather and asked me basic questions about my job to make our story sound believable.

I kept trying to calm myself. *It’s just lunch*, I told myself. *Get through it and move on.*

But the moment we stepped into the upscale Italian restaurant and I saw her parents seated in the corner booth, my stomach dropped.

I wanted to turn and run.

Her father was David. My boss. The CEO of the company I worked for.

Not just any boss—the man I’d shaken hands with at corporate parties and retreats. The same man who’d praised my work ethic just last month. And judging by his expression, he recognized me too.

“Oh no…” I muttered, but Meredith had already taken my hand and was pulling me toward the table.

“Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend, Anthony,” she announced with a dazzling smile, completely unaware she had just dropped me into the biggest professional disaster of my life.

The next hour was torture.

David grilled me—not about Meredith, but about work projects.

“So, Anthony,” he said, cutting into his steak, “how’s the Morrison account coming along?”

“It’s going well, sir. We’ll have the final presentation ready by Thursday.”

Meanwhile, Meredith’s mom couldn’t stop gushing about how happy she was that her daughter had found “such a lovely young man.” Every compliment felt like another nail in my professional coffin.

Then came the worst part. David raised his wine glass and said:

“I’ve always wanted Meredith to date someone more… ambitious. But if you work for me, Anthony, maybe you’re not a complete disaster. Just remember: if you hurt my daughter, you’ll never work in this industry again. I’ll see to it personally.”

I smiled and nodded like my life depended on it—but inside, I was falling apart.

After lunch, Meredith suggested a “romantic walk.” As soon as we were out of sight of her parents, I confronted her.

“You need to tell your dad the truth—now. I can’t risk my job for this. My mom depends on me. I *need* this career.”

She looked at me coolly and shrugged.

“I can’t. It would cause a huge family drama, and they’d never let it go.”

“Then we’re done,” I said firmly. “This was supposed to be a one-time thing. I’m out.”

“Relax,” she said, waving her hand. “I’ll call you next week for dinner with my parents.”

“What?” I stared at her, incredulous. “No. Absolutely not. This was a one-time deal.”

She turned and walked off like I hadn’t said a word.

“See you next week, Anthony. And don’t even think about backing out.”

I stood there on the sidewalk feeling like I’d walked into a psychological trap. How had a simple favor turned into a nightmare?

And yes—she called the following Tuesday. This time, it was dinner at her parents’ house. I knew I should say no, but David’s threat echoed in my head. What if she twisted the story?

So I went. Again.

Dinner was worse than lunch. David spoke as if I were part of the family’s future, and Meredith played the perfect girlfriend. Every fake smile was another link in this absurd chain.

On the drive back, I tried reasoning with her.

“Meredith, I’ll give you back the \$500,” I said, eyes on the road. “But this ends now. I can’t live under this threat anymore.”

She laughed. “I didn’t know you worked for my dad when I picked you. But now that I do, I’d be stupid not to use it.”

“You’re manipulating me.”

She shrugged, unapologetic.

“So what? You’re already in. If you try to back out or talk to my dad, I’ll twist the story. Make him think you harassed me. Who do you think he’ll believe—his darling daughter or some random employee?”

I gripped the steering wheel hard. “This is insane.”

“See you next week,” she said as she got out of the car. “Don’t disappoint me, Anthony.”

What she didn’t know was that I’d recorded our entire conversation on my phone.

The next morning, I went straight to David’s office, hands shaking, and told him everything.

I explained how I met Meredith, that I had no idea who she was, and how trapped I felt. Then I played him the recording.

I braced myself to be fired.

But David burst out laughing.

“I figured,” he said, wiping a tear from his eye. “You’re not the first guy she’s done this to. She brings home a new ‘boyfriend’ every month. Her mom can’t accept that Meredith prefers women, so she fakes it with guys to keep the peace.”

I just stared, trying to process it.

“I’ve known for years,” he went on, “but her mother’s old-fashioned. Rather than start a fight, I let Meredith handle it her way. What I didn’t know was that she was threatening and manipulating these poor guys.”

“So… I’m not fired?”

“Fired? Of course not!” David laughed. “I respect that you came to me instead of caving to her threats. That shows integrity. I’ll have a serious talk with her—and my wife, too.”

He walked me to the door. “Delete the recording, Anthony. Let’s keep this between us.”

I nodded and deleted it in front of him.

Of course, I didn’t mention the backup I’d already saved to my laptop. Just in case.

A week later, I was promoted to Marketing Manager. A month after that, I was leading my own team.

And Meredith? She never called me again.

I later heard through office gossip that her parents finally had “the talk” with her, and she gave up the fake boyfriend charade.

Sometimes I think back on that insane month and just shake my head. Five hundred dollars almost cost me everything I’d built. But in the end, being honest and standing up for myself turned out to be the best career move I ever made.

And Mom? She’s doing better than ever, thanks to the promotion—and the raise that came with it.
