Kefir the Cat: The gentle giant taking the internet by storm
In a quiet Russian town, a cat named Kefir has become an internet phenomenon due to his extraordinary size. This striking Maine Coon, with his snow-white coat and commanding presence, has reached an impressive weight of 12 kilograms—and he’s not done growing yet.

Kefir was adopted by his owner, Yulia Minina, when he was a small kitten. At the time, she had no idea just how enormous he would become. She named him after the popular fermented milk drink, a fitting choice for a cat as unique and memorable as he is. As he grew, it became clear that Kefir wasn’t an ordinary housecat.
While Maine Coons are known for being larger than average, Kefir has far exceeded typical expectations for the breed. Most adult males weigh between 6 to 8 kilograms, but Kefir reached 12 kilograms before even turning two.

What has captured the internet’s attention isn’t just his massive size, but his serene and gentle personality. Kefir is calm, affectionate, and incredibly intelligent.
According to Yulia, he doesn’t meow like other cats—instead, he seems to communicate in his own way, almost as if he understands human speech.
Despite his bulk, he moves gracefully around the house and enjoys curling up next to his owner, often trying to settle in her lap, even though he barely fits anymore.

Photos and videos of Kefir have been widely shared online, where people are often stunned to see just how large he is. Many mistake him for a dog or a wild animal at first glance. But despite his lion-like appearance, he’s a true sweetheart.
What’s even more surprising is that Kefir is still growing. Maine Coons typically continue developing until they are around three to four years old.
This means Kefir could become even bigger, further securing his place as one of the largest pet cats in the world. Vets have confirmed he’s in excellent health, and his size is a result of his breed, genetics, and proper care—not overfeeding.

Kefir’s story is a perfect example of how nature can surprise us. His unusual size, combined with his affectionate nature, makes him a living contradiction: a giant who’s also a gentle companion. He’s not just a big cat—he’s a reminder of the joy and wonder pets can bring into our lives.
